6 Must Have Music Apps
2 mins
Katie Campbell

Whether you're jamming out with friends on a Friday night or trying to pass time walking to class, music is essential to each of our daily lives. It helps us relieve stress, relate to people and friends, and take a much-needed break from our busy routines.

Here are six must-have music apps to help you find, listen, and enjoy music better!

Spotify

Spotify is Apple Music’s biggest rival. It has been long debated in the music community as to which of the two is the superior option. Spotify, in our opinion has better curated playlists and song suggestions. Their algorithm for music suggestions takes a personalized perspective of each customer’s preferred genres and tags similar songs to those that they are currently listening to. This makes it easy for customers to create and add to their favourite playlists.

At $9.99 per month, Spotify Premium is a slightly more affordable option to Apple Music and otherwise allows customers to listen for free with adds, an option Apple Music doesn’t have.

Download Spotify or Spotify Premium here.

Apple Music

Apple Music is extremely comparable to Spotify in many ways. It acts as a streaming and download platform, however, bolsters its services through leveraging the cloud storage and streaming. Apple Music is superior to Spotify’s offering through their exclusive music/album releases. Many artists chose to exclusively release albums and promotional content through Apple Music, making it the go-to place for first time listening and downloads.

Apple music has the largest song database, allowing downloads and streaming of over 35 million songs. Apple’s progression from single album and song purchases towards a subscription service, has been instrumental in keeping their service competitive with the release of Spotify and other similar services.

Apple Music offers a free 3-month trial and then after this period customers either spend $9.99 for an individual subscription or $14.99 for a family subscription. Apple Music is also available for download on Androids.

Silicio

For many of us that can’t decide between Apple Music and Spotify, Silicio allows you to merge both streaming platforms for a seamlessly integrated experience of both. Silicio functions as a free, mutual-platform for music streaming and album releases. It allows users to listen to music from Spotify and Apple Music at the same time, integrating both of their services. This has proved to be an innovative way to create unique playlists and access newer artists that are not yet on Apple Music.

With Silicio’s integrative technology, you are also able to share playlists through Twitter and cross over to SoundCloud.

To MP3 Converter

For students like ourselves who are on a budget or don’t mooch music using a friend's Apple Music or Spotify account, To MP3 Converter will allow you to still enjoy the most recent music without having to stream it directly from YouTube. To MP3 Converter allows you to enter a YouTube URL of a song and directly convert the song to your iTunes Library. This is a cheap way to create a full music library on a budget. We do however, have our ethical issues with using this App. Before downloading you should consider that MP3 Converter violates song licensing agreements and takes money away from the artists whose music you are downloading. If you are the type of person that wants to help support the artists you love we don't suggest this App for you!

SoundCloud

SoundCloud is the largest freeform music platform with 180 Million unique tracks. This platform is a freeform site for individuals to share, post, and listen to music. It is our go-to place to find the newest songs and songwriters. SoundCloud allows you to follow your friends, favourite artists, and record companies. The platform is offered in three different tiers, for free you can stream online with ads, for $6.99 with SoundCloud Go you are able to download music for when you don’t have access to internet/data, and for $13.99 you are able to download music offline without adds with SoundCloud Go+.

SoundCloud prides themselves in being a community of up-and-coming artists, where individuals can like, share, and promote the songs they like.

Shazam has the best song identification software on the market. It has been integrated into Siri, Snapchat, and many other apps we use in our daily lives. Downloading the app however, allows you to save, share, and replay songs that you’ve tried to identify. Have you ever been sitting in a restaurant or listening to a song in a movie and couldn’t identify the exact song name? With a click of a button, Shazam will identify what song it is in seconds.

This is a must-have app for music lovers trying to expand their playlists and identify songs in a quick second. Shazam allows you to quickly add any song identified on the app to your Apple Music or Spotify playlist with a click of a button.
